"Nian" was the name of a monster at first, and it came out every year at this time to hurt the people. At the beginning, everyone hid at home. Later, people gradually discovered that Nian was afraid of red, couplets (peach charms) and firecrackers, so they came out that year. At that time, people started to set off firecrackers, wear red clothes, and stick peach charms. Now during the Chinese New Year, everyone sets off firecrackers to drive away evil spirits and avoid evil.
In order to commemorate driving Nian away so that people can live and work in peace and contentment, people set that day as a festival, which later became the "Nian" in China.
